Eco-friendly Backpacks for your Mini Trendsetter

Back to school time already?  (and just when I felt the summer was gearing up.)  Speaking of gear, you may be shopping around for that perfect backpack for your child.  Well, your little trendsetter would look perfect with any of these hip backpacks.  Find out why each of these bags is so special for you and, as a bonus, also special for the environment.

Eco Gear

With a focus on global cooling, EcogearTM utilizes planet-friendly organic cotton, PVC-free materials, recycled plastics and toxic-free dyes and components.  These bags are also free of chlorine, dioxins, phthalates, and heavy metals.  They are not made from any ozone depleting chemicals and they are clean to recycle.  Aside from that, they are also really adorable.  (The adult line is more rugged as you can imagine.)

Your child can wheel around a panda, carry a monkey or opt for natural cotton backpacks or messenger bags.   They come in a variety of colors and animals.

Crocodile Creek

Perfectly sized for ages 3-8, Crocodile Creek hits the mark with their sweetly designed backpacks.  BPA, PVC and phthalate free, these packs will keep your child organized with lots of pockets.  The sturdy design prevents contents from being crushed, it has padded straps for comfort, and the pack even sports a mesh exterior drink holder.  Want to get the perfect stainless steel water bottle to go with your pack?  Crocodile Creek has the match for you, made of high quality stainless steel (#304) which does not require a protective coating/lining.  These drinking bottles are also completely recyclable as well as being lead, phthalate, BPA and PVC free.  A treat for you?  Crocodile Creek just hit the Hip & Healthy Kids Storefront!  Come check them out (found in Kid’s Gear section of the shop).

Keen’s Harvest III Backpack gains it’s cool stature from its nicely laid out and comfortable looking style.  This backpack is made from repurposed and recycled materials, specifically pre-consumer airbags!  Keen obtains un-deployed side impact air bags to upcycle into this cool bag.  Made in the USA and water-resistant, this would be a great pack for tween/teens (and adults alike).

Are your kids walking to school and soaking up the sun?  If so, the Voltaic line maybe just what they need.  A Voltaic Converter Solar Backpack has a solar panel on the outside of the bag which captures the sun’s energy to charge equipment.   3.4 Watts of power help to quickly charge handheld electronics which is perfect for teens who use up their phone batteries texting their afterschool plans.

Swiss-engineered Freitag’s Fringe is an amazing pack for those who may be less than gentle with their packs.  Made from used truck tarpaulins and straps made from used car seat belts, these packs are truck tough.  Durable zippers, vibrant colors, and spacious interior, Fringe will let you play hard back at school.
